Benefits and detriments can occur at different points in the life history of an individual, as in ORL1 (lectin-like low-density lipoprotein receptor 1) alleles that have been suggested to promote immune defense but also cardiovascular disease (Predazzi et al., 2013); or they can also occur at a similar time as in AR (androgen receptor) alleles that reduce risk of breast cancer but increase that of ovarian cancer (Levine and Boyd, 2001; Rebbeck et al., 1999). The gene discussed is AR; the disease is ovarian carcinoma.
