Considering that high levels of IL6 had also been detected in other highly coronavirus-mediated infectious diseases, such as the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in 2012 or severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002, the IL6 pathway emerges as one of the key pathways involved in the pathogenesis of this hyperinflammatory state (Li et al., 2023). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and infectious disease.
