Alternatively, our group established an in vitro subconjunctival fibrosis model using human conjunctival fibroblasts (HconF, Figure 6) by a hanging drop culture method to study the effects of various drugs including transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β isoforms [107], fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) [108], Rho-associated coiled-coil forming kinase (ROCK) inhibitors [109], all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) [110], prostaglandin EP2 and FP2 agonists [111] and rosiglitazone [109]. Here, FGF2 is linked to fibrosis.
