CD34 and inherited retinal dystrophy: Our group has explored intravitreal injection of human CD34+ stem cells from bone marrow (BMSCs) in immunocompromised rodent models of hereditary retinal degeneration and retinal vasculopathy.12, 13, 14 These studies demonstrated that intravitreal injection of human CD34+ BMSCs results in rapid retinal homing of the cells with protective effects on the retina or retinal vessels, depending on the underlying retinal pathology.
