,55,56,57 While CD4+ T cell numbers fell slightly, the disproportionate decrease in frequency of CD4+ T cells containing HIV DNA in this study suggests that CD4+ T cells and the offspring of CD4+ T cells that were susceptible to HIV infection (irrespective of the replication competence of the provirus) remain selectively driven to proliferation and expansion by cytokine exposure. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is HIV infectious disease.
