EGFR and Zygomycosis: These previous studies demonstrated that EGFR is required for A549 cells to endocytose Mucorales fungi and for an oral epithelial cell line to endocytose C. albicans. Although the effects of gefitinib on the host inflammatory response to mucormycosis has not been investigated, it has been found that gefitinib significantly reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines by oral epithelial cells infected with C. albicans (9).
