Autophagy is induced when S. aureus activates pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) such as toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 (NOD2), and is considered as a defense mechanism against bacterial infection (Askarian et al., 2018; Wang et al., 2021).
