The incretin hormones GLP and GIP are secreted from the gut in response to nutrient ingestion and stimulate insulin secretion by binding to specific receptors in pancreatic beta cells.30 Besides their antihyperglycemic action, they play a key role in reducing appetite, food intake, and ultimately body weight.31 As such, GLP-1 RAs and dual GLP/GIP-RAs have emerged as essential drugs for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes and, more recently, for the management of weight loss in the absence of diabetes. Here, GIP is linked to diabetes mellitus.
