One of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic vascular complications is the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and transcription factors by WBCs activated by advanced glycation end products, oxidative stress, angiotensin II, and cytokines.[17] A study with Mendelian randomization showed that WBC count may have a positive causal association with T2DM risk.[18] On the other hand, another Mendelian study showed that WBC was not associated with HbA1c.[19] The present study observed a statistically significant positive, very weak correlation between HbA1c and WBC. This evidence concerns the gene AGT and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
