There have been several reports of drugs that affect mitochondrial function, such as inhibitors of the electron transport chain complexes, inhibitors of overexpressed proteins of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and inhibition of VDAC, a protein necessary for the externalization of the ATP from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm, affecting at the end the metabolic function of the cancer cell [15,38]. This evidence concerns the gene VDAC1 and cancer.
