RBFOX1 encodes a splicing factor important for neuronal development and has been previously implicated in several neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders that are more common in men, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability and epilepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia28,29.
