VEGFA and POEMS syndrome: Several studies have demonstrated that a VEGF level of >1200 ng/mL presents a high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of POEMS syndrome.[17,18] In contrast, serum VEGF levels in patients with paraprotein-negative POEMS syndrome were not significantly different from those in patients with patients with classical POEMS syndrome.[12] Further studies are needed to determine whether the requirement for VEGF levels at diagnosis is consistent with that of M-positive POEMS syndrome.
