TSEs include scrapie in small ruminants, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer, transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) in mink, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans.12 TSEs are caused by the accumulation of PrPSc in the brain, a pathogenic protein that is a misfolded isoform of the original host prion protein PrPC. The gene discussed is PRNP; the disease is Creutzfeldt Jacob disease.
