The main pathological phenotype of AD is shrinkage of the hippocampus and cortex, the accumulation of plaques formed by extracellular insoluble aggregates of amyloid-beta fragments (Aβ), and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) formed by intracellular accumulation of hyperphosphorylated Tau (pTau) (3, 4).
