In a similar way, the epithelial cell markers E-cadherin and ZO-1 were decreased in keratinocytes from hypertrophic scar lesions and keloids whereas mesenchymal N-cadherin and αSMA were overexpressed (p < 0.05 vs. healthy skin; p < 0.05 vs. hypertrophic scar; Fig. 1A) suggesting phenotypic mesenchymal transformation of epidermal keratinocytes in hypertrophic scar and keloid skin lesions.
