It has been reported recently that virus-specific bystander TILs derived from a chronic infection often exhibit a non-exhausted memory phenotype and consist predominantly of memory and effector memory CD8+ T cells, whereas tumor-restricted TILs display mostly an acutely activated, effector memory, precursor-exhausted, or a terminally exhausted CD8+ T cell phenotype [54]. The gene discussed is CD8A; the disease is neoplasm.
