Based on the data collected from this systematic review, we can conclude that diabetes impairs the transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, primarily by affecting the expression of growth factors, such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), compromising fibroblast migration and proliferation, angiogenesis, and the production of the extracellular matrix (ECM), especially collagens I and III. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
