EGF and neoplasm: Álvarez-Teijeiro et al. reported that cytokines secreted by CAFs (but not by normal fibroblasts) in SCC cells activated the receptors for epidermal growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, and platelet-derived growth factor; this promoted the survival and growth of SCC cells and their dedifferentiation into CSCs, which are key to tumor initiation, progression, recurrence, metastasis, and resistance to therapy.
