This postoperative inflammation could be of preoperative origin (as the overexpression of several proteins has been observed on the ocular surface of eyes with pterygium, such as defensins, phospholipase D, and positive regulation of growth factors, including basic fibroblastic growth factor bFGF or vascular endothelial growth factor VEGF) [31,32,33] or intraoperative origin (due to a more aggressive surgical technique).
