The abundance of NETs correlates with active disease12 and key NET proteins, including neutrophil elastase (NE) and myeloperoxidase (MPO),31, 32 which are highly specific for neutrophils and are involved in the depolymerisation of chromatin during the formation of NETs, have been found to be increased in IBD through liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry‐based proteomics studies. This evidence concerns the gene MPO and inflammatory bowel disease.
