In line with the known increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases in postmenopausal women44, liver function parameters (alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), but not gamma-glutamyl transferase) also showed a menopause-related age effect (Fig. 3c and Extended Data Fig. 2). Here, GPT is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
