DME is mediated mainly by vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) and dysregulated growth factor levels, which cause hyperpermeability of the retinal blood vessels and capillaries, eventually leading to retinal thickening or hard exudates in the posterior pole4–6 Other vision-threatening causes of DR are tractional retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, and neovascular glaucoma6. Here, VEGFA is linked to vitreous hemorrhage.
