Interestingly, Guo et al. have shown that S100A8/A9 is induced during SARS-CoV-2 infection, where it mediates the activation of aberrant neutrophils that cause uncontrolled pathological damage and onset of COVID-19, while inhibition of S100A8/A9 could reduce the stimulation of these cells and restore their antiviral responses (Guo et al. 2021).
