Although several PWH with higher CD4 counts and PWOH also showed nonsynonymous intra-host mutations (Fig. 3a, b; Supplementary Fig. 8a), the number of nonsynonymous intra-host mutations per person was significantly higher in PWH with CD4 counts < 200 cells/μL than in the other subgroups (Fig. 3d), likely a reflection of higher levels of virus replication and longer durations of infection in this subgroup. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is infection.
