The low levels of several inflammatory cytokines, especially GM-CSF and IFN-γ, but also to some extent IL-13, IL-5, and possibly IL-2, associated with high levels of VEGF suggest that several mechanisms may be involved in the decreased risk of acute GVHD grades II-IV in home care patients compared to those in hospital isolation. The gene discussed is IFNG; the disease is acute graft versus host disease.
