Previous investigations conducted in different disease conditions, such as spinal cord injury (Liu et al., 2017), myofascial pain syndrome (Ye et al., 2020), and type 2 diabetes skeletal muscle insulin resistance (Shi et al., 2015), have demonstrated that activation of the AMPK/PGC-1α/SIRT3 pathway can improve mitochondrial function and diminish mitochondrial dysfunction. This evidence concerns the gene SIRT3 and myofascial pain syndrome.
