A2M encodes a cytokine transporter and a broad-spectrum protease inhibitor under physiological conditions, playing important roles in hemostasis, inflammation, immunity, and infections (Vandooren and Itoh, 2021; Lagrange et al., 2022), which can act as a chaperone, binding misfolded proteins and avoiding their accumulation during innate immune system activity, as well as during stress conditions (Wyatt et al., 2014), inhibiting the aggregation of heat-stressed proteins (French et al., 2008).
