In addition, we observed upregulations in stress response genes activating transcription factor 5 (Atf5) (threefold), which mediates the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (63–65), and nuclear protein transcription regulator 1 (Nupr1) (13-fold), which is a target of the integrated stress response (66, 67), and a downregulation in cytochrome P450, family 4, subfamily a, polypeptide 14 (Cyp4a14) (15-fold), which catalyzes fatty acid hydroxylation (68) and has been shown to contribute to MASLD progression (58). The gene discussed is NUPR1; the disease is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
