CD36 and renal fibrosis: This lipid metabolism signature is reminiscent of “Lipid‐Associated Macrophages” (LAM) found in the context of obesity, which highly express genes encoding ECM components and phagocytosis and promote fibrogenesis.[51, 58] Macrophage scavenger receptor CD36 mediated the uptake of long‐chain fatty acids which activated fibrogenic signaling and promoted renal fibrosis.[59] Our results strongly suggest that co‐regulation of ECM and lipid metabolic reprogramming represent a key aspect of EAMs biology during fibrogenesis.
