CXCL8 and age-related macular degeneration: Dib et al. (2015) detected more IL-6 and IL-8 secretion triggered by mitochondrial DNA in ARPE-19 cells. They discovered that the extent of expression was dependent on the amount of mitochondrial DNA (Dib et al., 2015). Therefore, the higher IL-8 concentration in the HPR group at day 16 in our study could be hint toward a potential induction of deposits in this coculture. Goverdhan et al. (2008) described a polymorphism in IL-8 promoter gene as a potential risk factor for AMD since they could detect this polymorphism more frequently in AMD patients.
