Hussain et al. (2011) detected a reduction in activated MMP2 levels in AMD donor samples. The authors hypothesized that this leads to impaired matrix degradation of Bruch’s membrane. This, in turn, leads to AMD associated pathology (Hussain et al., 2011), suggesting that NaIO3 treatment induces AMD-like mechanisms. This evidence concerns the gene MMP2 and age-related macular degeneration.
