The presence of neurotrophins can help in identifying patients as, at tissue level, the immunostaining for neurotrophins is more intense in GCA versus controls and, particularly, neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and P75 receptor (P75NTR) are only detected in GCA temporal artery specimens, serving as possible biomarker of disease (Régent et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene NTF3 and temporal arteritis.
