A study of patients with vascular parkinsonism has reported that even in the absence of ischaemic lesions on the striatum and the presence of only subcortical white matter hyperintensities, quantitative assessment of DAT binding on 18F-FP-CIT positron emission tomography (PET) showed that it was decreased in most striatal regions.32 This evidence concerns the gene SLC6A3 and vascular parkinsonism.
