PON-1 inhibits low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, cholesterol efflux,monocyte binding and transport, plaque inflammation, and destruction of oxidizedphospholipids, thereby reducing atherosclerosis and plaque formation.Additionally, by hydrolyzing homocysteine thiolactone, PON-1 may preventendothelial dysfunction and vascular injury [28].
