Using mouse models that lack the Cryba1 gene (which encodes βA3/A1-crystallin, a lysosomal luminal protein) and Akt2 knockin (KI) specifically in the RPE (Cryba1 cKO and Akt2 KI) and develop an AMD-like phenotype with age, it was shown that neutrophils infiltrate the sub-retinal space of these mouse models with age [10,11,73,74]. Here, AKT2 is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
