More importantly, Nestin‐cre mediated brain‐wide deletion of SWELL1 has been shown to generate greater neuroprotection compared to deletion in astrocytes alone in experimental stroke,[22, 23] although it also leads to lethality before 8 weeks of age.[24] These genetic studies suggest that SWELL1 channels in astrocytes and neurons are both involved in ischemic brain damage. The gene discussed is LRRC8A; the disease is Stroke.
