The establishment of hyperglycemia is due to (1) insulin resistance due to decreased glucose uptake in skeletal muscle, increased glucose production in the liver, and increased inflammation and lipolysis in adipose tissue; and (2) insufficiency of pancreatic islets due to decreased function and mass of β‐cells (insulin‐secreting) and an increase in the function of α‐cells (glucagon‐secreting) (Javeed & Matveyenko, 2018).
