BCL-2 as one of the most well-studied anti-apoptotic family members was shown to be a worthwhile target for anti-cancer therapy: cancer cell-protective BCL-2 overexpression and hence sequestration of pro-apoptotic proteins is a driving force of tumorigenesis in hematopoietic malignancies like chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) (Robertson et al, 1996; Del Gaizo Moore et al, 2007). Here, BCL2 is linked to lymphoid leukemia.
