Importantly, the impaired apoptotic cell death selectively in monocytes, i.e., Casp3/7Δmono mice, exacerbated the inflammation and increased host death due to LPS-induced sepsis (Figure 5), which suggests that the apoptosis-mediated reduction of monocytes is a novel fine-tuning mechanism to prevent excessive inflammation.
