However, our results show that, although mitophagy activation or initiation is elevated in myofibers of progeria mice, it seems that these myofibers have impaired capacity in effectively repair and clean these possibly damaged mitochondria, which may result in an accumulation of damaged mitochondria and dysfunctional mitophagy in the cells, as well as an excessive activation of cGAS-Sting signaling. Here, CGAS is linked to progeroid syndrome.
