For example, overexpression of SLC7A11 decreases the sensitivity of gliomas to temozolomide [25, 26] and renders melanoma resistant to BRAF inhibitors [27], whereas downregulation of SLC7A11 expression or blockade of SLC7A11 activity with specific inhibitors such as sulfasalazine (SSZ) effectively enhances the cytotoxicity of cisplatin or doxorubicin in colorectal, bladder, and triple-negative breast cancer cells [28–31].
