Consistent with this notion, FGF2 expression is increased in demyelinated multiple sclerosis lesions (Clemente et al., 2011) and FGF2 null mice treated with cuprizone to induce demyelination showed enhanced remyelination relative to control mice (Messersmith et al., 2000) suggesting that upregulated FGF2 expression was detrimental for OL/myelin. The gene discussed is FGF2; the disease is multiple sclerosis.
