However, following the 2003–2005 outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic, membrane‐bound ACE2 was first identified as the entry point of the SARS coronavirus (SARS‐CoV) into cells (Kuba et al., 2005), and subsequently showed to also be the access point into cells for SARS‐CoV‐2, which caused the COVID‐19 pandemic (Hoffmann et al., 2020; Jackson et al., 2022). Here, ACE2 is linked to COVID-19.
