MAPT and Alzheimer disease: Our study indicates that regions of the brain known to be selectively involved by the AD process74 have increased inflammation, which, at the cellular level, may reflect microglial proliferation, macrophage migration from the blood and, possibly, changes in astrocytes and endothelial cells,22 all of which are neuropathologically prominent in AD-involved regions but with regional variability, as are Aβ and tau density.73
