Therefore, COVID-19 may cause ageusia by eliciting T cell-mediated autoimmune damage and demyelination while traveling through nerves.16 Lastly, the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor has been implicated in the pathophysiology of taste dysfunction.17 Taste dysfunction is a rare side effect of ACE inhibitor therapy, and SARS-CoV-2 downregulation of ACE2 may cause dysgeusia through a similar mechanism.18,19 A better understanding of which structures are affected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus could help explain the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 related taste dysfunction.
