HIF1A and COVID-19: To develop a more durable intervention to combat COVID-19, we determined that SARS-CoV-2 inhibits mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to increase mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) production which activates hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α) to shift metabolism from OXPHOS to glycolysis, thus redirecting substrates toward viral biogenesis.
