Continued inflammation of the cornea affects the expression of intraocular inflammatory cytokines, and intraocular IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α in turn activate NF-κB and increase the expression of MMP-2, an important molecule in ocular tissue remodeling, which breaks down collagen, leading to scleral remodeling and contributing to myopia progression (Figure 1). The gene discussed is CXCL8; the disease is myopia.
