Previous studies have established the roles of the cGAS‐STING pathway in the host response to DNA viruses.[3, 4] Interestingly, recent studies also imply that cGAS and STING regulate the host response to certain RNA viruses by sensing mtDNA released into the cytosol upon infection,[3, 11] STING‐dependent translational inhibition,[30] and membrane fusion‐triggered IFN production.[31] We next explored whether IFN‐JAK1‐mediated activation of cGAS‐STING‐IRF3 is a common antiviral mechanism for different viruses. The gene discussed is IRF3; the disease is infection.
