Variables commonly included in the existing scoring systems [6,7] are variables related to the liver or known etiologies of liver cancer, such as chronic hepatitis B/C status, cirrhosis, liver function (albumin, bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase [ALT], aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alpha-fetoprotein [AFP], and gamma-glutamyl transferase [GGT]), liver stiffness, blood clotting (international normalized ratio and platelets), family history of liver cancer, alcohol use, and diabetes. This evidence concerns the gene AFP and liver cancer.
