It is interesting to note that the association between platelet activation and psychiatric disorders appears to be more stringent than the association between the overall extent of inflammation in patients with COVID-19, as reflected by systemic plasma levels of cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and CXCL-10, or downstream acute phase proteins produced by hepatocytes in response to inflammatory cytokines like C-reactive protein (CRP), even if the latter signals are much better predictors of short-term outcomes51.
