Cholinergic insufficiency is linked to Alzheimer's disease, and several cholinesterase inhibitors have been created to treat it, including naturally produced inhibitors, synthetic analogs, and hybrids such as Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and Beta site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1). This evidence concerns the gene BACE1 and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
